Malak Elshazly was born in 1990 in Cairo. She holds her BA, Art and Marketing, American University, Cairo. The artist made her international debut at Ara Gallery in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 2011.El-Shazly has a signature mixed media style. She uses photographs or pictures from magazines and adds paint and other materials, creating a layered textural scene of the everyday life of Cairo, people making their way through the streets, moments of loneliness and crowding, traffic, veils of paint floating over the architecture to give an impression of smog, sun and rain. As Cairo has attracted international attention with its changing political environment, the contemporary culture of this country has become more visible and work like El-Shazly’s has garnered recognition. El-Shazly has participated in group shows across Cairo, including the Sharjah Gallery, American University; Townhouse Gallery, Darb 1718, The Gallery and Tache Art. Malak El-Shazly lives and works in Cairo.
