Painter, curator and consultant Ian Maree was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Maree holds his BA in Visual Communication and Design, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town. Significant projects include the co-organisation of a retrospective of Vivian van der Merwe, The Sasol Art Museum, Stellenbosch University. A recent convert to painting, Maree characterises his artistic practice as constantly changing, technique, mediums and subject matter. Maree’s work is mostly comprised of two styles; one is a highly naturalistic portraiture style, and the other a series of paintings of city scenes. These works have a certain pared down appeal, city scenes of modest homes, other works are naturalist portraits in a studio style. It is this schematic and unfinished feel that actually make the work most appealing, graced as well by a meticulous division of the pictorial space, bright light bleaching out colour. We are very happy to offer work from this figure of the South African art scene.
