“My paintings are inspired by the aesthetic contemplation of water, where three visual fields come into play simultaneously - the bottom of the pool, the surface with its leaves and ripples, and the reflections of what exists above.” Ian Greig was born in 1952, Sydney. Greig holds his PHD, South Australia School of Art, University of South Australia. A theorist as well as an artist, his thesis was entitled “The Aesthetics of the Sublime in 20th Century Physics.” The thematic of the sublime is a central theme in the artist’s paintings. Dr. Greig serves as a lecturer in Art History & Theory, National Art School, Sydney. The artist works in oil, creating contemplative paintings that reflect the quiet rhythm of bodies of water. Greig’s works are distinguished by an elemental presence, tableaux of deep layer colour, hints of form beneath these transparent nets of brushwork. Select solo shows include Art house Gallery, Sydney, Greenhill Galleries, Perth, Mossgreen Gallery, Melbourne; Brian Moore Gallery, Sydney; Greenhill Galleries, Adelaide; Smyrnios Gallery, Melbourne; Nexus Gallery, Adelaide.
